I truly believe motivating staff can really make a difference to your business and will help boost company sales and staff performance, something any business leader will want to achieve. However, at times it can be hard to get motivated, and even harder to motivate your staff. But don’t despair; I have some top trips you can implement straight away:

  1. Happy Staff
It seems obvious right? But how do you know if your staff are happy? Meeting and talking with your staff regularly will help you keep a connection with your personnel and help them feel they are valued as team members. Provide them with good training and give genuine support and feedback on their accomplishments and constructive feedback where necessary. Remember, no-body likes to be ignored!
  2. Incentivise Staff
Incentive schemes are a great way to motivate staff, giving them a sense of focus and something to work towards. By making the goal something special that has real value to them as an individual can work extremely well, but even treating the team to pizza for lunch at the end of the week can have a positive effect on team moral.
  3. Be Positive
It can be hard to remain positive especially during difficult economic times, but it is important to keep a positive attitude in front of your team. Set an example; if you can’t be positive in front of your staff you can’t really expect them to have the same attitude with your clients!

  1. Keep it Interesting
All jobs can become monotonous at times, so set your staff new and interesting challenges they can manage and incorporate into their routine, this will motivate them and give them a sense of achievement. This should be supported by staff training, which shows your commitment to your staff and their future with your business.
  2. Value Staff Involvement
Your staff work at ground level, so they will know how well day to day systems are functioning. Ask for their feedback and find out how they think things can be improved. Not only will they feel valued but they may come up with a great way to make your systems more efficient!
  3. Sort Out Issues Promptly
Things go wrong, it is a fact of life, but don’t stick your head in the sand, address any issues without delay and listen to staff grievances. Quite often problems can be easily sorted so don’t ignore their problem; it could be a minor issue to you but important to them and by not addressing the problem you could escalates it further.
  1. Looking Good
Encourage your staff to dress smartly. If they look professional at all times they will more likely be in a professional mind-set which can boost business confidence and motivation.
  2. A Nice Environment
Make their environment a pleasant place to work. It should be clean and tidy and all equipment should work (including the coffee machine). Provide a nice area for them to be able to have lunch and encourage other staff members not to interrupt coffee and tea breaks, allow them to switch off for the duration of their break….it will mean they come back to work refreshed and focussed.
  3. The Future
Make sure your staff know what could potentially lie ahead for them. If you want to keep staff retention then you need to show them there are opportunities for growth; this can help instil long term motivation and a loyalty to your company.
  4. Don’t Wait to Say Well Done!
You don’t have to wait to the end of the week or the annual staff appraisal to say well done. If a team member has excelled at a task then tell them job well done!
